About this book
The Care of Books is an essay by John Willis Clark on the development of libraries and their fittings, from the earliest times to the end of the eighteenth century, as its title page says. Numbered figures illustrate it, among them Ezra writing the Law from the frontispiece of the Codex Amiatinus, with a press with open doors in the background.
One passage follows Layard's account of the Assyrian palace near Mosul, where rooms he called the chambers of records held clay tablets and cylinders. Other passages deal with English libraries: a catalogue of Peterhouse made in 1418, which places a Bible in the sixth lectern on the west side, and a single desk in the old library at Lincoln Cathedral. In another, Clark says he has reached the limit he set himself when he began the essay, and mentions a man who clung to ancient fashions and set his books with the fore-edge outwards.
