About this book
At scarcely four years old, Eliza Poor Donner Houghton experienced the hunger and confinement of a snowbound emigrant camp in the Sierra Nevada. Writing in 1911, she combines childhood recollections with information gathered from older survivors and the men who brought relief. Her account follows the Donner Party's passage toward California, the hardships of its mountain camps and the efforts to reach the stranded families.
The memoir also records the California of her later childhood. In Sonoma, adobe houses, red roofs, horseback gatherings and elaborate clothing make a detailed picture of daily surroundings. Memories of General Vallejo's home and the town's changing flags connect these personal impressions with a wider history of political change. Houghton's purpose is partly corrective: she challenges sensational accounts of the disaster through remembered care, family sacrifice and research. Readers interested in overland migration will find both a survivor's perspective on a crisis and recollections of life in early California.
