About this book
The history describes the Donner Party as drawn toward the land bordering the Pacific by reports of its fruitfulness, healthfulness, and almost tropical beauty. The party proper was organized in Sangamon County, Illinois, by George and Jacob Donner and James F. Reed. The train comprised about one hundred people after additional members joined at Independence.
The account of life under the snow describes people seldom visiting one another or leaving their cabins, listening rather than looking for relief. The mothers encouraged despondent people with promised relief, more from the necessities of the situation than from belief that help would arrive.
