The Eye for Spiritual Things and Other Sermons (1906) collects the preaching of Henry Melvill Gwatkin (1844-1916), the Cambridge church historian who held the Dixie Professorship of Ecclesiastical History. Though Gwatkin built his reputation on scholarly works such as Studies of Arianism, this volume from the Edinburgh publisher T. and T. Clark shows the lecture-room scholar in the pulpit. Among its contents is his address on the death of Queen Victoria, preached at Girton College on 27 January 1901, five days after she died. The title sermon points to a recurring theme, that spiritual perception, like physical sight, must be trained and used. For readers of church history, the collection gives a firsthand picture of faith as it was preached in late Victorian and Edwardian Cambridge. Free PDF download available on BDeBooks.
