The Knowledge of God and Its Historical Development, Volume 1, is the opening volume of the Gifford Lectures by Henry Melvill Gwatkin (1844-1916), the Dixie Professor of Ecclesiastical History at Cambridge. Delivered at the University of Edinburgh and published in 1906, the lectures trace the development of the human idea of God from the ancient Near East and Greece through Judaism and the early Church. Gwatkin was best known for his work on the Arian controversy and on early Christian doctrine, and the Gifford series shows him handling a wider sweep of historical theology. Volume 1 covers the preparatory religions and the rise of Israelite monotheism. The Gifford Lectures were the most prestigious series in natural theology in the English-speaking world, and Gwatkin’s contribution stands in the line that runs from William James to John Macmurray.
