About this book
The face of Manchuria, Korea, & Russian Turkestan is written and illustrated by E. G. Kemp. The chapter headed A Visit to the Thousand Peaks speaks of an early start for the Changsha Valley, in which is an interesting group of monasteries, both Taoist and Buddhist. The text says that of the Taoist and Buddhist monasteries, the former do not admit women visitors, but the latter do.
A river crossing is described in which the river was full of ominous-looking blocks of ice, and the tug lands the party in about a quarter of an hour on the Korean bank of the Yalu. The writer says that the second day the party reached the little town of Aral at the head of the Aral Sea, after passing through the most desolate country. The text says the desolate country could not have been more accurately described than in the words of Browning, who wrote of such starved ignoble nature. A lad is put on a big sort of door and placed in the luggage van of the train, and the conductor comes round to see if a doctor is aboard to give further aid.
