About this book
What to See in England by Gordon Home is described as a guide to places of historic interest, natural beauty, or literary association, and is marked 1908. A house description says that on the north side is the room used by Darwin as a study, in which he wrote some of his most important works. The text says the life led by Darwin when at Downe was exceedingly quiet and regular, with rising at six allowing a walk and breakfast before commencing work at eight o'clock.
A section headed Epsom: Its Races and Its Salts gives the way there from Waterloo by the South-Western Railway and puts the distance from London at 14 miles. The text says the city of Norwich has a unique charm from its combination of the mediaeval with the modern, and gives the cathedral, founded in 1094 by Bishop Herbert Losinga, as the chief object of interest. The text describes the road to Brantwood from Coniston as running under the shade of beautiful trees, at the head of Coniston Water.
