About this book
Written in 1876 by a Catholic missionary bishop who later became Cardinal Archbishop of Baltimore, this book sets out the main teachings of the Catholic Church in plain language for readers outside it. James Gibbons built it from instructions and talks he gave to mixed congregations in Virginia and North Carolina.
Each chapter takes up one doctrine or practice, from the unity and authority of the Church and the place of the popes to the saints, the Virgin Mary, prayers for the dead, the sacraments and the Mass, ending with chapters on the priesthood, clerical celibacy and marriage. Because his readers were mostly Protestants who looked to the Bible first, Gibbons supports almost every point with Scripture and then with the early Church Fathers. Later chapters answer charges of religious persecution, such as the Spanish Inquisition.
This is the revised and enlarged ninety-third edition of 1917, whose prefaces count fourteen hundred thousand copies printed. It remains a clear record of how American Catholics explained and defended their faith in the late nineteenth century.
