About this book
In The Family at Misrule, Poppet and Peter are discussing many things in general, and the mystery of life in particular, as they sit crouched up together in an old tank that had been cast out in the first paddock because it leaked. Poppet holds a little dead chicken in her hand that she had picked up in the garden, and remarks that being alive is very funny.
One character's account says that on Saturday he had elevenpence only left, and lived on it that day, Sunday, and Monday, sleeping in the Domain at night. A character named Meg turns over restfully, feeling how good it was that there would be a sister near always instead of the strange hands and face of a nurse. Nell says that Esther's mother will be here this evening to look after the children.
