About this book
The Felon's Track, or History of the Attempted Outbreak in Ireland, is by Michael Doheny and embraces the leading events in the Irish struggle from the year 1843 to the close of 1848. The edition is described as the original edition with D'Arcy M'Gee's narrative of 1848, a preface, some account of the author's contemporaries, an index, and illustrations. The book is dedicated to General James Shields, United States Senator.
The text says O'Brien's attitude at the Council of War destroyed the last hope of the insurrection, and adds that no nobler and braver man has appeared in modern Irish history than William Smith O'Brien, but that at the head of an insurrectionary movement he was incompetent. Mitchel and Meagher are said to have agreed that 1848 would not have been the year of Liberation. A list of descriptions gives John B. Dillon as a barrister of thirty-two years of age, five feet eleven inches in height, with dark hair and dark eyes.
