About this book
A Prisoner of the Reds includes a chapter numbered IV and headed Some Horrors of the Retreat. The writer says the preceding chapters are based on a report which he was asked to make to the War Office. The writer says spells of intense cold invariably visited the Krasnoyarsk district in mid-winter, and that the thermometer fell, a few weeks later, to 49° R. below zero.
The writer says his party had "struck" a people who did not believe that there was any such thing as nationality, religion, or private property, and who saw mankind as divided into two classes: the Proletariat and the Parasites. The writer says the Communists encourage the study of classical literature, but wage merciless war on all the distinctively religious literature produced by Christianity. The writer says that, as the wells were rare, they had to get up very often thrice in the course of a single night.
