About this book
The Fern Lover's Companion is a guide for the northeastern states and Canada, by George Henry Tilton. The book is dedicated to Alice D. Clark, engraver of these illustrations. The contents list groups such as The Bracken Group, The Chain Ferns, The Shield Ferns and The Beech Ferns.
The text speaks of the fascination of the ferns, felt even by someone who may know little of their names and habits, and of beholding them adorning the rugged cliffs and gracefully fringing the water-courses. The writer says that a learner consulting the glossary for the meaning of terms while studying real specimens may hope to learn the names and chief qualities of our most common ferns in a single season. The entry for The Fragrant Fern describes fronds four to twelve inches high, glandular-aromatic, narrowly lanceolate and twice pinnate or nearly so.
