About this book
The Manual of the Botany of the Northern United States is by Asa Gray. The title page says the book includes the district east of the Mississippi and north of North Carolina and Tennessee. The book is the sixth edition, revised and extended westward to the 100th meridian, with twenty-five plates illustrating the sedges, grasses, ferns, etc.
The entry for Hepatica, called Liver-leaf, describes an involucre simple and 3-leaved, very close to the flower, so as to resemble a calyx. The name Hepatica is explained as coming from a fancied resemblance to the liver in the shape of the leaves. The entry for low saline plants describes succulent leafless jointed stems and opposite branches, with the flower-bearing branchlets forming the spikes, and explains a name composed of sal, salt, and cornu, a horn.
