About this book

The Flag-Raising is a work by Kate Douglas Wiggin. The contents list names chapters called, among others, A Difference in Hearts, Rebecca's Point of View and The Saving of the Colors. A character named Miranda says "I don' know as I cal'lated to be the makin' of any child," as she folds Aurelia's letter and lays it in the light-stand drawer.

The text says Jane had the inestimable advantage of a sorrow, and that she was engaged to marry young Tom Carter, who had nothing to marry on, it is true, but who was sure to have, some time or other. The text says there was much discussion as to which of the girls should impersonate the State of Maine, which was felt to be the highest honor in the gift of the committee. The State of Maine mounts the platform, vaguely conscious that she was to recite a poem, and Uncle Sam whispers "Speak up loud and clear, Rebecky," in the front row.
