About this book

The contents of The Story of Waitstill Baxter are grouped under the headings Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter, with chapters such as Saco Water, The Sisters, Deacon Baxter's Wives and A Brace of Lovers. Foxwell Baxter was ordinarily called Old Foxy by the boys of the district, and also, it is to be feared, by the men gathered for evening conference at the various taverns; he had a small farm of fifteen or twenty acres, but the principal source of his income came from trading.

A letter signed Ivory Boynton says the writer has written a sketch of the Cochrane craze, the romantic story of a man who swayed the wills of his fellow-creatures in a truly marvellous manner. The same letter says the writer read in a copy of Ovid last night: The best of weapons is the undaunted heart. Miss Peters, of Union Falls, an aged spinster with weak lungs, tells a man that she feared she couldn't stand the cold in his house, having heard he was very particular about the amount of wood that was burned.
