About this book

The Framework of Home Rule is by Erskine Childers. The contents list chapters called The Colonization of Ireland and America, Revolution in America and in Ireland, Canada and Ireland, Australia and Ireland and South Africa and Ireland. The contents also list The Elements of the Problem, Federal or Colonial Home Rule and The Exclusion or Retention of Irish Members at Westminster.

The author says Mr. Chamberlain himself a few years before had committed himself to a scheme of restricted self-government for Ireland. The text says purchase itself settles nothing beyond the bare ownership of the land, and that temperance will never be tackled thoroughly but by an Irish Parliament. The text says all Irishmen are ashamed in their hearts of the encouragement given to drunkenness by the still grossly excessive number of licensed houses, which in 1909 was 22,591.

About the author

Erskine Childers

The Riddle of the Sands, published in 1903, sends two Englishmen yachting among the Frisian sandbanks and has them stumble on a plan for the invasion of England, and it is routinely named as the first modern spy novel. Childers wrote it partly as an argument for taking North Sea defence seriously, and the Admiralty took the point.
