About this book
The account of mounted warfare describes opponents who are comparatively few in number but can both fight stoutly and retreat safely when they are overcome in combat. The text argues that infantry can overcome and eject mounted riflemen but move too slowly to catch and destroy them. The responsibility for securing complete victory is assigned to mounted troops acting as mounted riflemen.
The discussion of training urges a distinction between weapons and mobility, and between the combat phase and the phase before combat. The text rejects the assumption that steel weapons themselves make men better at riding, drilling, scouting or manoeuvring.
