About this book

The Free Man’s Library is by Henry Hazlitt and is described as “A Descriptive and Critical Bibliography.” The text says the inclusion of any book in the list implies recommendation. With few exceptions, the compiler says, comments made or quoted emphasize the merits of a book rather than its defects, with reservations, misgivings and objections kept to a minimum.

An entry quotes W. H. Baker in the San Francisco Chronicle on Mr. Hoover turning his pen to a great penetrating analysis of the causes of the great depression. An entry for Austin Hopkinson’s The Hope of the Workers (London, 1923, 104 pp.) gives “The point of view of one who has himself been successful as an employer and is well known as an Individualist.” An entry for G. M. Trevelyan’s Life of John Bright, dated 1913, calls it a portrait of the life and times of the great exponent of free trade, by an outstanding British historian.
