About this book
In autumn 1808, a column of French prisoners approaches the wooden barracks at Norman Cross, watched by guards and sympathetic villagers. Arthur Brown follows the officers among these arrivals, including Tournier, whose low spirits resist a companion's attempts at cheer. The opening moves from the road outside Peterborough to the crowded quarters inside the camp, where older prisoners greet their countrymen and share a meal with them.
Wartime confinement gives this historical novel its setting, while friendship and religious faith shape its more personal scenes. A later passage finds Villemet and Cosin keeping watch during Tournier's illness, with Alice Cosin helping to make the household comfortable as he recovers. Through these acts of care and conversations about hope, Brown sets private distress beside the routines of captivity.
