About this book
Old Mahlmann accepts food from the local children with a sharp tongue and an occasional story in return. One child is especially drawn to his recollections of Paris during the French Revolution, when he served a Danish baron. His account introduces Manon, a grocer's daughter whose lively manner and resourcefulness become important when the baron is taken to prison.
Charlotte Niese builds this historical short story around the gap between a child's immediate concerns and the dangers surrounding the adults. Mahlmann remembers his precious confirmation suit, the difficulty of speaking French and the rewards promised by his master. Those small concerns sit beside questions of courage, loyalty and responsibility. The story offers readers a compact study of character through a storyteller whose complaints and blunt judgments reveal more than he intends.
