About this book
The contents list D’Alembert as the thinker, Diderot as the talker, Galiani as the wit, and Grimm as the journalist. The account describes d’Alembert’s life in a glazier’s attic as marked by studious poverty that limited acquaintances without depriving him of friends. The account describes an initial project to translate Chambers’ English Encyclopædia into French.
Rousseau is reported as saying that Paris was as divided over French or Italian opera music as if the question concerned religion. The account says Grimm joined the Italians and wrote The Little Prophet of Boehmischbroda on their behalf in 1753, profanely imitating the style of Old Testament prophets.
