About this book
The account says Arouet entered the Bastille on Monday, May 17, 1717, and records a receipt signed the following Thursday for books, clothing, and essence of cloves. The account describes a memory capable of inventing and retaining whole cantos without committing them to paper.
The account places Voltaire in March, 1754, with Prussia and France barred to him and two kings among his enemies. The discussion of Voltaire’s income says City of Paris annuities or bonds provided money that angry Louis might take away for ever at any moment with a line of writing and his signature. The description of writing into the night mentions brain and nerve stimulated by strong coffee while work continued on language.
