About this book
Frederick Jackson Turner gathered thirteen of his essays and addresses into this collection, printed as they first appeared and preceded by a short preface dated 1920. All of them return to one question: how did the open land at the western edge of settlement shape the American people and their institutions?
The opening essay starts from a census statement that the frontier line could no longer be traced, and argues that American history is largely the story of settling the Great West. Later chapters take up the Old West, the Middle West, the Ohio and Mississippi valleys, the Louisiana Purchase, pioneer ideals and the state university, and the contributions of western life to American democracy.
The book is the historian's own case for the frontier thesis, argued at several points across a quarter century, and it remains a useful starting place for anyone who wants to read the idea in its original form rather than in summary.
