About this book
Charles A. Goodrich organizes American history around selected events, giving each a separate treatment. The 1851 volume ranges from early claims of northern exploration to colonial settlements and later conflicts, with biographical sketches alongside the historical accounts. Its preface describes a book for younger readers, people with limited time for study and those returning to subjects they once learned.
Exploration by Columbus, the settlement at Jamestown and the growth of New England appear in the opening contents. A passage from later in the book follows naval operations near the British coast, including John Paul Jones's raid on Whitehaven. Goodrich also gives religious belief a prominent place in his account of early settlers. Readers today can examine both the events he chose and the moral judgments through which a nineteenth-century historian explained them.
