The Fur Country

Lieutenant Jasper Hobson is sent by the Hudson’s Bay Company to build a fur-trading fort at the edge of the Arctic, on a cape jutting into the polar sea near the seventieth parallel. His party, which includes the intrepid traveler Mrs. Paulina Barnett and an astronomer sent to observe an eclipse, raises Fort Hope and settles in for a long, brutal winter of wolves, cold, and cabin fever. Then the ground betrays them. Their cape is no cape at all but a slab of ice torn loose from the mainland, now drifting on the open ocean and thawing beneath their feet.
