The preface to The Geography and Geology of South-eastern Egypt, by John Ball, describes an attempt to provide a systematic account using the latest information available and based on the writer's surveys. A discussion of investigations by officers accompanying the research ship Pola covers observations of the land alongside work chiefly concerned with oceanographic questions. The comparison of longitude methods prefers the writer's triangulation values to transport of chronometers, which the account says is liable to considerable errors.
The description of Wadi Betan gives its total length as over fifty kilometres and its average slope as about seven metres per kilometre. The andesite of Gebel Sufra is described as a columnar deposit overlying syenites and diorites at the mountain's top.
