About this book

On foot in April 1868, John Muir heads toward Yosemite through California hills thick with spring flowers. His account begins with this approach to the valley, then turns to its granite walls, the Merced River, surrounding forests and changing mountain weather. Published in 1912, the book combines personal travel writing with observations of trees, birds, flowers and the glaciers that shaped the landscape.

Muir gives the giant sequoias particular attention, counting seedlings and examining the ground where new trees take root. He describes how fire and fallen trunks prepare soil for growth, and considers how roots and woodland debris retain rain and melting snow. Alongside these close studies, the contents include practical advice on spending time in Yosemite and chapters on the valley’s early history. Readers interested in nature writing can follow both his eye for color and light and his patient attention to forest renewal.
