About this book

Eleven-year-old Jack wants to become a writer like his father, so he begins an account of life among his four sisters. Their London household gives him plenty to record: tangled stamp collections, untidy habits, divided loyalties and personalities that refuse to fit his preference for order. Anne rushes through things, Hebe defends her siblings, Serena acts before thinking, and young Maud takes care of her eldest sister.

Mrs. Molesworth tells this children's novel through Jack's candid, sometimes fussy voice. His complaints reveal affection as well as irritation, making small family disagreements part of the pleasure of reading. A lost diamond ornament brings a more serious worry into these domestic adventures. Readers interested in sibling relationships and stories about growing consideration for others will find a close view of how these children judge one another and themselves.
