The Gray Mask

A gray cloth mask offers Detective Garth a dangerous way into a criminal organization. His inspector wants him to impersonate Simmons, a chemist expected by the Hennion gang, and discover the meaning of a boast about that night's plans. Garth accepts with less than six months in the detective bureau behind him. A scrap of paper for secret messages and a carefully arranged railway interception turn the assignment into a test of nerve and disguise.

Wadsworth Camp mixes police investigation with Garth's feelings for Nora, the inspector's daughter. Nora pursues an inquiry of her own and presses for a raid, while Garth worries about the chances she is taking. Their conversations place affection beside professional secrecy and competing ideas about who should face danger. Readers who enjoy undercover mysteries will find suspense in concealed identities, guarded information and the uncertain trust between people working toward the same goal.
