About this book
A conversation outside the Sibley courthouse takes an unsettling turn when a lawyer finds the widow Mrs. Clemmens badly injured in her cottage. Moments earlier, a stranger had described how a crime might leave investigators uncertain about which visitor to suspect. District Attorney Ferris treats the timing as more than chance and sends the young investigator Byrd to have the stranger detained. The opening makes everyday movements through a small town suddenly matter: a passing figure, a visit to a house, and an opinion offered on the courthouse steps.
The novel also follows the strain of giving evidence. In a later scene, Miss Dare prepares to appear in court while Ferris struggles between concern for her distress and the demands of his office. Her words turn the prospect of testimony into a personal ordeal. Readers interested in detective fiction can follow a story concerned with suspicion, the limits of proof, and the human cost of a legal case.
