About this book
The title page names Rear-Admiral Albert Hastings Markham, late commander of H.M.S. Alert, as author of a personal narrative of the voyage of the Alert during the Arctic expedition of 1875-6. The text says provisions and stores, sufficient to last for three years, had to be received on board and stowed away. The text says an old paddle-wheel sloop of good carrying capabilities was ordered to convey all surplus stores, that could not be stowed on board the two exploring vessels, as far as the island of Disco, on the west coast of Greenland.
The text says a young lady, a relative of one of the officers, had taken the trouble to direct a letter to each individual on board, containing a beautiful Christmas card. The narrator says the aim has been to describe daily life during a very eventful service, and that the narrator has quoted largely from the journal and in some instances thought it best to copy from it verbatim.
