About this book

Fred and Harry Markham can scarcely contain their excitement when Cousin Giles offers to take them to Russia. Their guide, a retired naval lieutenant and trusted family friend, expects the brothers to study maps, learn some history and keep notes of what they see. The trip begins with a train to Hull and passage on the steamer Ladoga, where the cargo and the captain’s decisions give Giles plenty to discuss.

William Henry Giles Kingston mixes a young travellers’ adventure with lessons in observation, commerce and conduct. The boys’ preparations make travel feel like an education requiring attention as well as enthusiasm. Later, a stranger approaches the party after a visit to a fair, asking for a private meeting and raising concerns about the police. His appearance introduces an account of religious persecution, adding a serious strand to the sightseeing.
