About this book

Edgar Wallace opens this 1928 novel on a wet February afternoon in Berkeley Square, where Lady Raytham reads a telegram from her husband abroad and waits for two visitors, the Princess Bellini and Mrs. Gurden. Their talk turns to Peter Dawlish, a young man about to leave prison after a sentence for forging his employer's name on a cheque.

Leslie Maughan, the young woman who works alongside Scotland Yard, is drawn in as Peter takes lodgings in a house kept by Mrs. Inglethorne. There he notices odd comings and goings, suspects the landlady of dealing in stolen goods, and finds a child being badly treated. A dead man, a butler named Druze and a tangle of family secrets follow, and Peter's record makes him an easy suspect.

Wallace keeps the pace quick, with short chapters, a thread of romance and clues such as a telltale perfume, a silk shawl and an old record.
