About this book
The Hardy Country is by Charles G. Harper and has the subtitle Literary landmarks of the Wessex Novels. The book is illustrated by the author. The preface describes Dorsetshire, the centre of the Hardy Country and the home of the Wessex Novels, as a land literally flowing with milk and honey.
The text says there are days of bright sunshine when the sea is in colour something between a sapphire and an opal, the cliffs reveal unexpected hues and the sands of Trebarrow, the "Trebarwith Strand" of the novel, shine golden. Chapter II is titled Winchester: The Ancient Capital of Wessex. The text says that seeing the dexterous shearing, the quick, practised movements of the men and the panting helplessness of the sheep, one is reminded of the similar scene in Far from the Madding Crowd. The text says the Rainbow country of Dorset is, in fact, a country innocent of railways.
