About this book

Stratford's streets and the villages around the Avon give Charles G. Harper a map for exploring Shakespeare's local world. His 1913 travel book combines a sketch of the writer's life with accounts of houses, churches, bridges and country settlements. The opening traces Stratford's name to a road crossing a river and places the town among Roman routes, woodland and pasture. Harper also argues for Shakespeare's authorship through the plays' connections with the surrounding district.

Beyond the familiar landmarks, the chapters follow village names, local rhymes and the history attached to particular buildings. In the middle excerpt, a route through Dorsington and Barton leads to Bidford's old bridge, whose eight arches differ in shape and size. Small architectural observations share space with anecdote and pointed commentary. Readers interested in literary places can use the book to see how one early twentieth-century observer connected Shakespeare, regional history and the details of an English summer landscape.
