About this book

At his cabin beside a lake, David Langston lets his dog Belshazzar help decide whether he will keep gathering woodland herbs or seek a city livelihood. The same playful ritual turns to the prospect of courtship, exposing David's anxiety about changing the life he knows. Gene Stratton-Porter's Indiana novel sets these private choices among budding trees, returning birds and the plants David harvests for chemists.

The developing relationship with Ruth Jameson gives the landscape a more intimate meaning. In a later scene, David shows Ruth the oak beneath which his mother rests, while Ruth speaks of her own mother's suffering and asks for a gentler resting place for her. Work, affection and grief meet in the woods. Readers drawn to rural fiction will find detailed attention to seasonal life alongside a romance concerned with care and the meaning of home.
