About this book
Laura Landon leaves her father's comfortable Chicago apartment for New York, carrying the strain of his criticism and the memory of a family tragedy. She wants work, somewhere to live and friendships she can choose for herself. A temporary secretarial job in a radiologist's office gives her an early chance to build that independence, with unfamiliar medical terms and hotel bills adding practical pressures to her emotional uncertainty.
Ann Bannon's novel follows Laura through working life and the city's gay social world, where attraction and friendship bring their own complications. Jack takes her to a basement bar after a painful exchange with her father, offering company as she struggles with rejection. Readers interested in family estrangement, women's relationships and the effort to find a place among others will find those concerns grounded in ordinary conversations and sharply felt memories.
