About this book
The Heart of the White Mountains, Their Legend and Scenery is by Samuel Adams Drake, with illustrations by W. Hamilton Gibson. The text says Centre Harbor is advantageously situated for a sojourn more or less prolonged, and that although settled as early as 1755 it is, in common with the other lake towns, barren of history or tradition. The author calls an anecdote's hero General Hampton, and the legend says that in an evil hour his yearning to amass wealth suddenly led him to declare that he would sell his soul for the possession of unbounded riches.
A narrator looks along the road and listens, finds not a human being and not a sound, and is alone upon the mountain. A narrator says that from a certain point he no longer walked upon earth but on air, and that respiration became more and more difficult. The index lists, among others, Pilot Mountains from Gorham and Pine Mountain (Gorham, New Hampshire).
