About this book
Seventeen trips through Somáliland by H. G. C. Swayne records exploration and big game shooting from 1885 to 1893, with accounts of journeys in the hinterland of the Somáli Coast Protectorate. The book includes descriptive notes on the country's wild fauna, together with numerous illustrations and maps. The account of dress describes the tobe as a simple cotton sheet made from two sewn breadths, about fifteen feet long and worn in several ways.
The hunting narrative describes a heavy four-bore pushing the narrator onto his back, while the rhinoceroses charged through the jungle at full gallop. The notes on vegetation call the billeil the most thorny bush in the narrator's estimation, growing about ten feet high and bearing small curved hooks of great strength.
