About this book
The History of Oswestry covers the British, Saxon, Norman, and English eras, together with the borough’s topography and its ecclesiastical and civic history. The stated scope includes notices of botany, geology, statistics, angling, and biography, with sketches of the surrounding area added to the volume. The account says the battle site was said to bear the name Maeshir, explained as the long field and associated with the conflict’s length and obstinacy.
The ancient brass seal represents King Oswald seated in his robes, with a sword in his right hand and an oak branch in his left. A quoted manuscript description derives Whittington, or White Town, from White Castle, while giving Drewen as the Welsh name.
