About this book
The History of Tammany Hall is by Gustavus Myers, author of A History of Public Franchises in New York City. This is the second edition, revised and enlarged, dated New York, 1917, and it keeps the preface to the first edition of 1901. That preface says that a certain spell of wonder attaches, in most men's minds, to the career and character of the Tammany Society and Tammany Hall.
One passage describes the Tammany Society in 1790, when its members welcomed McGillivray and twenty-eight Creek chiefs in New York, and the museum it set up in the old City Hall for Indian relics. It names the society's early occasions as its anniversary day on May 12, the Fourth of July and Evacuation Day. Another passage recalls Tammany recommending McClellan as the Democratic nominee in 1864. Another notes the city's growth and the movement of people from Manhattan to other boroughs.
