About this book
The History, Theory, and Practice of Illuminating is by M. Digby Wyatt. The list of plates describes Plate I as taken from the fragments of the Bible of Charles the Bald, preserved in the British Museum. The list of plates says that Plate II gives the outline of the preceding plate, and that the beginner may make his first attempt at practical illumination.
Part I, headed What Illuminating Was, says an attempt has been made to concentrate into limited dimensions that which has generally been treated very voluminously. The writer says that, for popular convenience and simplicity, it has been deemed expedient to divide the history of the Art of Illuminating from the theory of its use and practice. A passage on style says that a style of ornament is well shown in Plates X, XI, and XII, from the Bedford (so called) missal, and in the three last plates of this manual, from the beautiful Missal of Ferdinand and Isabella.
