About this book
Chats on Old Sheffield Plate is by Arthur Hayden and names a companion volume by the same author, Chats on Old Silver. The first chapter, an introduction, is headed with a list of topics that includes, among others, Early plating and Silver platers at Sheffield. The text remarks that in an examination of European art one wonders where imitation ends and where originality begins.
The text says that what the glass-worker did at Venice was copied over the Alps in Germany. A passage on the Dish or Potato Ring says the Irish silversmiths were particularly ingenious in their pierced work, and that the Dish Ring or Potato Ring is a form peculiar to Ireland. The text names Will Hughes at Dublin, about 1770, as maker of some interesting pieces reflecting the sanest art.
