About this book
A narrator says the house of Heine Brothers, in Munich, was of good repute, since no man doubted its word or solvency, though as bankers they did not have what would in England be considered a large or profitable business. Ernest Heine, the junior brother, is a married man with a wife some twenty years younger than himself, two daughters and one son, and the senior brother is known as Uncle Hatto.
Ernest Heine and his wife inhabit a portion of one of those new palatial residences at the further end of the Ludwigs Strasse, yet are described as not palatial people but the very reverse, living in homely guise. A woman says to Herbert that she thinks he presses her too hard, and Herbert answers that he does not advise it and that, if she wishes it, she shall have back her troth. Madame Heine returns home from the market with Isa, and Agnes meets them on the landing with a packet that Fritz brought from the bank.
