About this book

A spring evening on the English moor brings Helen Caniper face to face with Zebedee, the young doctor she remembers from childhood. At twenty, she knows the winds, paths and farmsteads around her home, yet the prospect of a visiting uncle troubles her. Her search for the Easter fires gives the opening its mixture of familiar landscape, private belief and uneasiness about change.

E. H. Young follows these feelings into the pressures of family life and love. Helen worries about Zebedee's health while her brother Rupert urges her to marry him and questions the duties that keep her tied to the household. Miriam's hopes of leaving and Rupert's transfer to another bank branch make home feel increasingly uncertain. Readers interested in domestic fiction will find close attention to conversation, conflicting loyalties and the ways affection can both comfort people and limit their choices.
