About this book
The Interest of America in Sea Power, Present and Future is by A. T. Mahan. The preface describes a collection of detached papers, issued at considerable intervals during a term of several years, and written without special reference one to the other.
The text says that in case of war the United States will unquestionably command the Canadian Railroad, yet will be impotent against any of the great maritime powers to control the Central American canal. The author writes that the United States is wofully unready, not only in fact but in purpose, to assert in the Caribbean and Central America a weight of influence proportioned to the extent of her interests. The text names the Chiriqui Lagoon, visited by Columbus himself, as having every natural adaptation for a purely naval base but not drawing the operations of commerce to itself.
