About this book

Nelson's letters supply the thread for A. T. Mahan's account of how a young naval officer became a leading figure in British sea power. This first volume follows his childhood, early service, promotions, marriage and return to command as conflict with France begins. Mahan combines correspondence and narrative to examine the admiral's temperament, motives and professional judgment alongside the events of his career.

The Mediterranean chapters connect decisions aboard ship with events across Europe. During the operations of 1796, Nelson weighs the value of holding Corsica while Spain's possible entry into the conflict threatens Britain's position. His changing opinions show strategy taking shape under pressure. Readers interested in naval history will find a biography concerned with the relationship between individual character, command and national policy, with letters giving direct access to the questions occupying Nelson at the time.
