About this book
The Japan-Russia War is subtitled An Illustrated History of the War in the Far East. The introduction says the Japan-Russia War goes into history as the greatest military struggle the world has known. The text says the gunboats in the bay rendered invaluable service, steaming close in and pouring a heavy fire upon the Russian batteries, covering the advance of the infantry through the shallows.
General Stoessel, finding that there was no use in continuing the sanguinary conflict now that his flank was turned, ordered a general retreat. General Kashtalinsky, as already stated, had with him one battery of field artillery, but taught by past lessons he declined to unmask its whereabouts until the advance of the Mikado's troops made it absolutely necessary. The text describes the Japanese as crawling, with the living using the bodies of the dead for protection.
