About this book
The text places three persons under the shelter of some low-browed cliffs upon the Irish coast, two of them talking earnestly. A small brig appears about four or five miles from the shore with her canvas closely reefed. A boat takes its way across the ocean with its course laid directly towards the English shore.
Chapter IV speaks of days of pack-saddles and pillions, in which persons were not valued according to the precise mode of their dress or equipage. Sherbrooke cries to Caroline, vehemently, that in his wildest follies and rashest acts he has thought of her and loved her. A man stands overpowered by the feeling of having lost all hope in his own fate, with the cold sneering tone of the Earl of Byerdale still ringing in his ears.
