About this book

On Norway's western coast, two rival warriors row to a rocky island to settle a dispute over the woman they both hope to marry. This fierce opening introduces the family background of Erling, a strong but gentle young man whose courage earns him his name. Fond of the sea, he commands Viking crews on cruises of his own, placing him within a world of armed neighbours, local leaders and seafaring adventure.

R. M. Ballantyne's historical novel for young readers also makes room for life away from combat. Alric sets out with a salmon spear through a glen of pines, waterfalls and glacier-fed streams, then hides to surprise Hilda and Ada. Such scenes bring playful family life into the same landscape as the warriors' struggles. Readers interested in Viking fiction will find a story that combines courage and leadership with romance, youthful mischief and close descriptions of Norway's coast and valleys.
